I am looking for a place to volunteer my time on Sundays for a few weeks before vacation, and continuing on into the fall. I work for a small supplemental power company and may also be able to bring some other volunteers along. Just tell us when and where, and I will do my best to help out.

  2. Amy George says:

    Eric,
Please e-mail jshuck@rocketmail.com or follow @findagraver on twitter. The directions to the worksite are in the ‘maps’ section. Thanks!

My Grandmother Rachel M Lewis is buried at Evergreen H1 07755 what are the chances of finding her grave to clean up that area. Who can I contact. Thank you,

    • jgshuck says:

Unfortunately, that plot number doesn’t seem to match the maps we have. I would suggest contacting the cemetery office at 804-643-4702.

  7. Mo says:

My stepchildren’s Father is buried in Evergreen and I think it would be great for them to volunteer, but I have not found any recent info about helping.

    • jgshuck says:

Unfortunately due to issues with the owner, we have ended our volunteer work at Evergreen for the time being. We have moved our volunteer efforts to East End Cemetery which is next door to Evergreen and is in as bad a shape as Evergreen. You can read about the East End Cemetery clean up at eastendcemetery.wordpress.com We need volunteers for East End Cemetery and you are welcome to join us there.

      • Hello. I am available any time. Unfortunately, I don’t have transportation. I do live in Churchhill by the hospital and feel very adamant about this cause. My mail is

  8. EVERY TIME A BODY IS LAID TO REST WHO GETS PAID? EXACTLY, WERE DOES THE MONEY GOES.
SO WHY DOES EVERGREEN LOOK LIKE THAT.

  9. Damon R. Charity says:

We saw a segment on the local news last night and would like to know more about the restoration program and issues with the owner for Evergreen. I am an employee at a nearby business and am sure some of my co-workers would be interested in helping. Can you tell me about the issues with the owner? It’s absolutely disgraceful that this is happening and your work has been stopped. We’ll do whatever we can to help.

  10. Crystal Franklin says:

I would love to help! Please notify me of cleanup days in the future!

    • jgshuck says:

We would love to have your help. See the Work Day Calendar tab on this web site for a list of the days when we are working. We also have a work effort going on at adjacent East End Cemetery which is in the same shape as Evergreen. We need help there as well. The next work clean up day there is May 28. See https://eastendcemetery.wordpress.com/work-calendar/

  11. Crystal correa says:

Hi my name is crystal correa and I am very interested in helping clean a cemetary but I have a cemetary in mind that I think would need a good ran up. I just feel like I wanna help a soul rest with peace. I don’t have a website I don’t have a job I’m a house wife with kids. I just feel like doing something right that’s all

    • jgshuck says:

If you can find the owner the cemetery, see if they would be ok with you doing something. If it is abandoned, maybe a local historical society would have some information.

  12. My husband and I have searched through parts of the cemetery looking for my mother/ grandfather who is buried there since 1959, no luck. I think the other part of it is on the side road where the train tracks are located but I have not been in there yet. My grandfathers name was Mr. Richard E. Brown Coal dealer 1980s and it was fenced in around the area of their grave. At the time A . D . Price was the undertaker on Leigh Street, now VCU owns the building. My mother was buried next to him/ daughter Rosa Brown Thomas. I would like to help but it would be after 5pm on weekends I work out of Richmond area. I am the granddaughter needing to find them too.

    • jgshuck says:

I have a few burial records for Evergreen cemetery. I have a Richard E. Brown Sr. in the records who died July 6, 1961, age 75. Is he your grandfather?

  13. Yes he was my grandfather and I have my mother grave there also. Rosa E Thomas, 5181956. It may be other relatives that are great grandparents. I look at the map but little confusing to me. I will come by Saturday after work 545pm maybe I can see some more of the area. Thanks for this information truly a blessing.

  14. Good morning I stop by but of course it was after 545. I drive a hour from work and I’m off on Thursday and Friday’s I can try to see to find there graves. I feel it is located on the E. Richmond Road near the old dump side. It is closed up when I drove by there and can they put a dumpster on that side too? I really appreciate the time and effort put in cleaning up this historian grave site.
    thank you

  15. Carrington Erhardt says:

We will be working at East End Cemetery next to Evergreen on Sunday morning, July 31, from 10:30 – 2:00. Would you able to stop by then?

      • Unfortunately, I work on Sunday 8-4 pm, I appreciate all you do. If I can give me a contact information I will call and see if you guide me to the location then maybe I can try to find on my own. thanks

  17. Linda small says:

Do you need to sign up prior to the date you want to volunteer? I am looking at August 13 th. I live about 3 hrs south of Richmond near Raleigh. I know that weather is a factor.

    • jgshuck says:

No need to sign up ahead of time if it is just a few people. Check the web site for last minutes changes primarily due to the weather. Most likely on that day we will be working at East End Cemetery. John

  18. William and Alveta Washington says:

We would like to be notified the next opportunity to volunteer for clean up.

  19. I am a local artist completely enamored by Evergreen Cemetery. After a couple trips out to photograph the sites, I’ve dived into research at the Library of Virginia. I am super interested in volunteering as much as possible and shedding light on this beautiful place.

    • jgshuck says:

We work most Saturday mornings at adjacent East End Cemetery. See East End Cemetery work day calendar to see when we are working. The next scheduled work day at Evergreen is September 24.

  23. Sym Calvillo says:

Hi, I saw that there’s a work day scheduled for this Saturday. Could you tell me if I need to sign up ahead of time? Also, what do I need to bring with me and where do I park and meet up with everyone? I love about 1 1/2hrs away so imnot too familiar with the area. I’m definitely interested in helping out though!!

    • jgshuck says:

We would welcome your help. Details should be posted tomorrow about where to park, etc. If you have tools such as bow rakes or loppers, bring them and gloves too if you have them. We will have many tools and gloves on site as well. Please contact one of the phone numbers on the flier to let them you plan on coming to help just so we know how much food to prepare.
